RIVER AND LAKE ECOLOGY ASSESSMENT AND RESTORATION
Myanmar is originally enriched with numbers of culturally precious and ecologically rich lakes, wetlands and rivers (over 8.2 million hectares) which have a number of endemic species and cultural values that are found nowhere else in the world. However, such lakes and rivers are suffering from the environmental effects of increased population and rapid growth in industrial, agricultural and tourism sectors, and climate change impact. Ever-increasing amounts of sediment and nutrients – run off into the rivers that feed the lake – resulted ecosystem imbalance and its related problems such as eutrophication
. The return of a degraded ecosystem to a close approximation of its remaining natural potential is very crucial. Myanmar Sustainable Development Engineering Services (MSDES) offers the ecosystem assessment and effective restoration program.
